Here’s why we love…”12 Days Under the Sea”

I am particularly touched by this month’s featured product, children’s book, 12 Days Under the Sea, mainly because of its’ author. The author of this book, eight-year-old Caden Mack, created this book after adapting the song “12 Days of Christmas” to his very own song “12 Days Under the Sea.” Shortly thereafter, Caden created this book. There is nothing more exciting than to see children taking responsibility for their own lives by creating and interacting in ways that stimulate and are fun for them! But this very special young author isn’t the only reason this book is featured…

This colorful and imaginative book aids teachers and care givers alike in teaching early mathematical concepts, such as, Counting forward (addition) (increasing) and counting backwards(subtraction) (diminishing). It equates numeral (symbol) to quantity (how many). Additionally, Colorful and clever figures add to the memory and correlation of how many to the number symbol, states, Dr. Dinghy Sharp EdD.

I am also fond of the fact that Caden Mack and his mother, Robin Larsen Mack, created this book together, with Caden as the author and Robin as the “illustrator,” or more accurately, the “construction paperist!” All the images were cut-out from construction paper and pieced together by hand, by Robin. There is nothing more important or special then these types of interactions with kids. Not only do projects like this (whether you actually publish them or not!) help to build self-confidence and foster creativity, but they also serve the practical function of making math and learning fun and interactive!

Just as Caden hopes you all enjoy singing and reading 12 Days Under the Sea, I too hope you delight in this delightful children’s book!
